In a collaborative public-private partnership Glosten and its partners (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Maritime Administration) have undertaken a study to establish the feasibility of developing a hydrogen fuel cell powered coastal research vessel for operation on the west coast of the United States.  The study considers operational capabilities (e.g. range, speed, seakeeping, dynamic positioning, overside handling, radiated noise) as well as the ability to meet the Scripps scientific mission objectives.  The team has worked closely with both the US Coast Guard and DNV-GL to identify the regulatory gaps for a hydrogen fueled vessel and to establish the steps required in a path to regulatory approval.  The environmental benefits of hydrogen are also explored to establish carbon reduction when compared to conventional diesel fuel.
